From an early age, I have always battled issues with my weight, yo-yoing between fit and fat. Over the course of the last two years, I was definitely losing the battle. Beginning in the Summer of 2009, I started becoming sedentary and developing horrible eating habits. The result of this lifestyle was a 40+ lb weight gain that finally topped out at 212 lbs. By January, I was finished making excuses for myself and I began looking into personal training. I knew that I had to do something to get me out of this unhealthy and dangerous lifestyle, and I had had success with trainers in the past. After much research, Raising the Barr certainly stood apart from the rest of the pack. I could really tell that working with Clint and his staff would be a much more “full service” experience, which is what I desperately needed. I began working with Raising the Barr’s head trainer, Drew, in February of 2011, and I immediately began to see results. Over the course of the last two months I have dropped 10-15 lbs of fat and added around 5 lbs of muscle. While I still have a ways to go before I realize my goal, I have absolutely no doubt that I will get there with the help of Raising the Barr.

I just wanted to thank you again for everything! I just checked my mail and found the newsletter and the “client of the month” section and it meant a lot. I couldn’t have done this without the help, motivation and accountability you and Brett provided during the 12 weeks. Brett was great and even though it was early, I enjoyed every morning I worked out. It always brought a great start to my day. He continually pushed me to goals I never thought I would have met when I walked in for the first workout. If I had the budget, I would be there three days a week for an ongoing 12 week rotation. The hard part now is just keeping that momentum outside of RTB. Around the office, my family and friends have noticed a difference and I have noticed a difference in myself too. Last year my mother suffered a debilitating illness that brought us both to a realization: That health is a process, a commitment, and is much more than the absence of disease—- it is the best to embrace your life. Trying to engage her doctors in meaningful conversation about her condition and what, as a family, we could do to support her caused a lot of self-education about chronic health conditions and their management. One conclusion that I came to is that strength training is one of the very best courses of action not only for the chronically ill, but for those that want to prevent future health problems. Helping mom helped me know what steps I needed to take not only for her, but for myself. As I approach my fortieth birthday I am mindful of what the next fifty years or so may hold. I want to be able to embrace the future with a little more grace and balance because of the steps that I am taking now. After 12 weeks of working out at Raising the Barr, I enjoy how my everyday activities are easier to do, of how I have opportunities to try things that I wouldn’t have dared to do before because of problems with knees or lower back, of how I will have more time with my husband because of all this (not just on the chronological clock), but because I can keep up with him and all of the things that he likes to do. Maybe we’ll start biking together, now, because we can. Maybe it’ll be walking more or kayaking more—-but the important thing is that we have options for spending that time together that I didn’t have before. And I am grateful. I entered the program not intending to lose weight, but to gain strength. I entered hoping to learn techniques for exercise. I entered hopeful, willing to do the work, and committed. I got out of it as much as I had hoped and a little more. Now, if only I can find a seamstress to take in all of my pants so that they fit!
